We're gonna need a bigger pot

 Al'reet m' chiefs,

Of course the title's a play on a line in the 1975 film Jaws - 'We're gonna need a bigger boat'. Before I get onto pots, I'd like to share a little outing, and perhaps some boats... It's been an action packed week off and now I'm feeling like I need extra time to recover! One highlight was going over to the north coast with the kiddiwinkles and ancient ones.

The Fern Pit Cafe on the edge of Newquay, overlooks the River Gannel and Crantock beach. If I ever I think Long Mizzle's split levels are challenging, I think of the heavenly steep cliff side garden that tumbles down from the cafe to the boathouse and footbridge below.

Above: Red Valerian (Centrranthus ruber)

Unfortunately the steps, boathouse and footbridge were closed off on the day we visited. I have many fond memories of spending whole dusty summer days as a child, mucking about crab fishing, then walking back up the endless steps for an ice cold strawberry milkshake on the top tea terraces.

These upper steps look easy going  - but they get increasingly steeper as you go down.

The cafe, boathouse and ferry have been owned by the same family since 1910. The menu has been revamped over the years but happily the inside of the cafe has changed very little, still with serene white washed walls and painted concrete floors-

Beetroot humus, avocado and apple sandwich (a bit healthy 'eh!)

Flashback joy - even the toilet cistern and mirror is still the same -

But most spectacular of all - the views -

Above: my future house being built perhaps ;)

Below: Just look at those Tree Echiums go!

Here's my stash of little Tree Echiums back at Long Mizzle, ready to be re-positioned. They will take about three years to flower, set seed and then die -

Self-seeded seedlings beneath the area where last years spiky bloom was -

Some more boats - this time at Newquay harbour -

A rare action shot of me in my bobby dazzler carbooted sunglasses (£1) and double layer woolen cardie (£3) (I think I am turning into my old school science teacher!) -

Onto more carbootyness  - here are the pots I found at this week's Rosudgeon car boot sale -

Stacked on top of each other - x2 massive red self-watering / water reservoir tomato planters. These will house my five different types of tomato plants in the greenhouse. A steal at £10 for the pair.

The blue storage container is earmarked for the cucumbers. I need to dig out my potato bags as my tatties are well and truly chitted now!

Also £10 for two - sturdy stonewear pipe junctions that will be planted with succulents.

I am really chuffed with these carbooty finds, as pots are really quite expensive from garden centres.

This week has all been about trying to carve out space for more veggie and fruit growing. With food prices rocketing, I am going back to growing more edibles this year... but I cannot bring myself to cast away the ornamental plants.

Above - before: A bit wild

Below - after: New circular, stone lined bed for peas, fennel and rhubarb

Wigwam for the peas - a work in progress -

The hardening off bench - where to put it all!?

Next project: rebuilding the storm battered voodoo arch for the runner beans. This means new compost, new wood and the bottoms cut out from the pots (=less watering required).

Phew, that's enough for today. I'll leave you with one more pot and one more boat -

Tulips with colour coordinated laundry

Coastal cottage, Flushing

I hope you are keeping well. For those with blogaleenas, I look forward to properly doing the rounds this week (as you know I am always fashionably late darling!)

Lulu xXx

p.s. This is how Monsieur (AKA 'Twenty3Thirty2') spent his time off - if he ever gets round to doing this live, we have decided I will be playing bass guitar, with sunglasses and granny cardie of course ;) -

Thank you for visiting!

  1. Phwoah! Not sure what's nier, that lovely view or the sound of your sandwich.
Loving the colour co-ordinated washing line and how Long Mizzle is bursting into life, I think we're a fortnight or so behind you up here! xxx

  2. Wonderful photos, your car boot finds are good. Your garden looks amazing, unsurprisingly you are weeks ahead of me, I have two very small lettuce seedlings and that is it at the moment. I will not be hardening off until the end of May!

  4. Your week off sounds just perfect! Look at those views, tumbling cliff side garden and - not to be forgotten - that delectable sandwich!
I could do with some of those self-watering / water reservoir planters, but stoneware pipe junctions are really something else! Love the new circular bed with the wigwam, well done you!
I'm off the listen now to Monsieur's efforts, and I'm sure you'll make a brilliant bass guitar player, especially when wearing £ 1 bobby dazzler sunglasses and granny cardie! xxx

  5. I like the music - ever tried playing to your plants? I do believe they like it :) Lovely Newquay but I imagine all that salty air must make growing some plants challenging. I am looking for pots so have pot envy of yours - every time I go to the recycling to search there is a queue of cars down the road and beyond waiting to drop off so I have to drive on (to work) as can't hang about... no doubt there are bargains to be had if you could only get to them but don't worry I have a plan b - park up the road next time and walk in- put 'sold to the wood fairy' labels on things then come back wiv da car). Your hardening off table looks crammed, I have bravely planted up everything except tomatoes and cucumber but now am worrying about when slugs might appear and demolish the lot - they even climb up walls here ya know!

    1. I do often sing to the plants Betty - it is amazing that they don't die! If I see a plant on the Newquay seafront I can guarantee it will survive here - we're a little more sheltered on the south side. Great idea for the skip recce and labels! Monsieur is too embarrassed to go to the skip with me, says I always have my head in other people's bags :0 Be cursed the wall climbing molluscs! xXx

  6. I envy your location! having lived in South Hams for a year or two I still miss the soil, the sea, the sky that special clear blue light that plants love! Enough of that green eyed stuff, I am 'blessed' with clay soil, Pennine wet weather and a shady garden - what is not to love!!
I shall have to live vicariously through your gorgeous photos - here is to a good summer of vegetable growing 🪴🌿🌱😊

    1. My sand is mostly sandy - but do you know what -I've found a dense clay patch at the bottom of the garden. So dense I could have shaped a bust of Lionel Ritchie's head from his 'Hello' video. Thanks Kate, here here to a grand vegetable growing summer :) xXx

  8. Hi Lulu, I've never been to Crantock...it looks beautiful and those Tree Echiums are obviously very happy there! I'm salivating over your healthy sandwich and that cardi looks just the job for a breezy beach. I can see how busy you've been in the garden - it's really coming to life again isn't it? Plus, it's obviously allowing Monsieur to find his own inspiration. What a talented pair! xxx

    1. The sandwich was nice and healthy Claire - but not in shot - the big bowl of delicious cheesy chips and mutant chocolate cake that I had to help polish off ;) Monsieur only used to go into the garden to have a fag, but he doesn't smoke any more. He's happy in his music lair xXx

    1. Glad you liked it. Great idea Beate, Tree Echiums should appear at the future Long Mizzle nursery ;) Of course Monsieur & I will play for your garden party. Then we can claim we are massive in Germany, like David Hasselhoff used to be! xXx

  10. The garden is looking wonderful. And it is lovely to see the view over Crantock. It has been too many years since I was last on the sands there.
The pots were a great find. I'm searching for some myself but fear I may end up having to pay garden centre prices. Xx

  11. The first place we visited on our one & only holiday in Cornwall was Newquay. I love boats & water, took lots of photos but all on slide film. My slide scanner gave up the ghost so can't use them now.
In my garden I use a lot of containers but I'm really envious of your drainage joints.
Lovely photo's, I'm getting used to your ramblings and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Very relaxing to sit with my cup of tea and read your blog. 😊 🐕 🐢

    1. I wonder what year that was David? I suppose the harbour hasn't changed too much? Oh drat on the slides. I know there used to be a postal service, where you could sent them off and get them digitized. I too have some old slides, but haven't ever gotten round to sorting them out. I'm glad you are getting used to the ol' ramblings and you are wise to bring tea xXx

    1. Thank you :) It's a lovely cafe and spot Mike, well worth a visit. There's a little car park for only 6 or so cars at the Fern Pit, or some on road parking along the road if you're lucky. Failing that there's the East Pentire Headland car park nearby. Breakfast menu is on until 11:30, then it switches to the lunch menu. I know you frequent Newquay as I've enjoyed seeing pictures of the harbour on your blog posts :) xXx

  14. That sandwich sounds epic!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had hummus sandwiches all week at school (with wild rocket and cucumber and cherry tomatoes) as I got a pot of it reduced to 26p in Tescos Southwold as well as 2 tubs of cherry tomatoes for 16p each plus all the left over bread from our cottage! Nice cheap and healthy week.
Oooh, I love the tree Echiums! They are so amazing.
Love your new peabed-looks so neat! I wish I had more garden to plant veg in. I have so many seeds but not enough room for everything. I've put in courgette seeds today but only have room to house one plant but want them aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall!

    1. That sounds like a bobby dazzler of a lunch week Kezzie. I like to save dinner leftovers for lunch. Sometimes I have a 'weird buffet lunch' comprised of about five different clashing leftovers! Too many plants and not enough space, I know that predicament well :0 xXx

Great finds with the pots. Planting veggies in pots is something I plan to do as well.

    1. Thanks Ivana. It is beautifully wild on the north coast. If I won the lottery, which I don't actually play, I would get a place by the River Gannel! The wind howls round it in the winter. Happy pottering :) xXx
