There's no place like home

Eh up ducks,

Camping on the Lizard

A super quick bloggy post today. Gritty life and endless rain seem to have been getting in the way of gardening. Monsieur got me a new tent for my birthday. It's a great improvement on my old festival tent that only qualifies as 'three man capacity' if packed like sardines. The new one has a living room area with windows and a porch canopy at the front. We even put some bunting up. Posh tent heaven!

 Moodiness over Long Mizzle

Fed up with the constant foreboding weather forecast and restricted time off from work, I decided to brave it and take the kids on an outing on the Lizard, Cornwall's rugged southern peninsula. Little did we know Storm Betty was ominously approaching. On the advise of an old camping mad school friend,  I had pre-ordered some serious pegs and extra guy ropes (cross storm peg revelation - thanks Shauno!). Some old tights were joined together and and used to strap our tent either side to the base of nearby low growing trees.

A Cornish dry stone wall and horse shoe shaped hedgerow enveloped our pitch and provided wonderful shelter. The scariest part was when at 1:30 in the morning, after a brief lull, the storm seemed to come back with a vengeance. Instead of blowing in the semi-steady southerly directional it had been, it now whirred round like a tormented tornado. Thankfully we escaped a trip to Oz, but a morning walk revealed the Wicked Witch of the East had visited some of the other tents.

On our return home, the storm battered garden looked a real mess. The french bean poles and sunflowers had toppled over. The grass was beyond long and scraggly.

Here's a video of my tidying efforts -

I will leave you with some pre-storm pictures of the beautiful serpertine rock formations and wild heathland found at Kynance cove. Although a bit scary at times, our little camping trip was just what the doctor ordered.

  2. What an adventurous and hair-raising camping trip, Lulu! I'm glad you came prepared with some extra strong pegs and ropes so that a trip to Oz could be avoided! Sounds like your girls had lots of fun, though, and I'm absolutely loving the trip down memory lane to Kynance Cove.
Well done on your garden tidying up, now can you come over and do mine? xxx

  3. The camping trip sounds quite an ordeal and reminds me of when, as kids, we used to go camping and fishing. Nothing fancy though, tiny ridge tents, cooking over a fire and trying to dry clothes
The transformation of your garden "camping area" made a good before & after sequence in the video. I've just weeded my patio paved area for the 2nd time this summer so know how satisfying that job can be. I use one of those hooked " thingys" like yous.
Good to see another of your posts; take care

you look like Vita Sackville-West while gardening - very glam!!
have to bring my 2 agapanthus pots inside for winter..... to frosty here in the east...... i wish a could have such a big nest of it in my garden because lovely flowers.....

  5. Long time since we've been camping, but remember the fun times from the past. We spent some time on the Lizard earlier this year, always a special place. We were luckier with the weather though. Enjoyed your post, all good wishes.

  6. Oh your camping trip took me straight back to my childhood....we once dug a trench to divert the water on a camping trip to Yorkshire. Glad you survived and actually had fun though.
This summer has been horrendous hasn't it? I'm happy you've allowed the bees some more time on the tree echium. I'm nominating patio broom sweeping as the sound of summer '23. :-D xxx

  7. I used to love camping but a storm like that would have put me off for a long time. Looks like we're getting some good weather just as the kids go back to school.
